SBSO CELEBRATES K-9 PIT’S 3RD BIRTHDAY
While most pups might spend their birthday chasing tennis balls and enjoying treats, K-9 Pit is doing what he does best — working hard to keep our community safe.
Today, the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office is proud to celebrate Pit’s 3rd birthday — even though he’s spending it out of town at his annual recertification training in North Port, Alabama.
Hey, everyone has to work on their birthday sometimes — even our four-legged officers!
Pit, a highly trained narcotics detection K-9, is brushing up on his skills this week at Alabama Canine, the same facility where his SBSO journey began in November 2023.
Each year, Pit and his handler, Narcotics Agent Patrick Clark, return for recertification to ensure Pit stays in peak shape and sharp on scent detection.
Born in Hungary and donated to the department by a local resident who wishes to remain anonymous, Pit initially underwent an intensive month-long training program and later completed a four-week “Narcotic Detection Canine Handler Course” with Agent Clark. The training method incorporated detection into play, building both skills and a strong bond between the pair.
Since joining SBSO’s Special Investigations Division, Sheriff James Pohlmann said Pit has become a vital asset — assisting with traffic stops, search warrants, and school searches alongside local officials.
“We’re proud of Pit and the work he and Agent Clark do every day,” the Sheriff said. “These annual recertifications ensure our K-9 teams stay sharp and mission-ready. It’s just one more way we remain committed to ‘Keeping St. Bernard Safe.’”
Col. Daniel Bostic, commander of the Special Investigations Division, echoed Sheriff Pohlmann’s praise.
“Pit has become an indispensable part of the Sheriff’s office, assisting in more than 150 calls since his last birthday” Col. Bostic said.
“His training, discipline, and natural instincts bring a whole new level of support to our investigations. He and Agent Clark are a perfect example of teamwork in action.”
So today, we wish Pit Happy Birthday — even if he’s spending it with hard work, vigorous training sessions, and maybe (just maybe) a well-deserved treat at the end of the day.
