SBSO CAPT. RICHARD BARR RETIRES AFTER MORE THAN THREE DECADES

After more than three decades of service, the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office is bidding farewell to a respected leader who has dedicated his career to serving our community. Capt. Richard Barr will soon retire after 33 years of service, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.

Capt. Barr, who serves in the Field Operations Bureau Patrol Division, began his law enforcement career in 1979 and has held a variety of critical roles while serving the citizens of St. Bernard Parish.

In addition to many years in Patrol, he has worked in the Criminal Investigations Bureau, Special Investigations Division Narcotics Unit, and Special Operations Division. He also served in the Marine Division, was a member of the Special Response Team, and was the Sheriff’s Office’s first certified diver.

Throughout his career, Capt. Barr served under three sheriffs, Ralph McDougall, Jack Stephens, and Sheriff James Pohlmann, demonstrating a longstanding commitment to the agency and the community.

Sheriff Pohlmann praised his decades of service.

“Capt. Barr’s dedication and leadership have made a lasting impact on this agency and the people we serve,” the Sheriff said. “He has always answered the call with professionalism and a commitment to public safety. We are grateful for his service and wish him the best in retirement.”

Col. Walter Dornan, commander of the Field Operations Bureau and Capt. Barr’s supervisor, said he is someone you can always count on.

“His knowledge, calm demeanor, and willingness to step up have earned him the respect of everyone he has worked with,” Col. Dornan said. “He will certainly be missed.”

Looking back, Capt. Barr said a willingness to serve has always been at the heart of his work.

“Anyone who wants to make a difference has a choice, stay on the sidelines or step up and contribute,” he said. “It takes dedication and sacrifice, but that’s how real impact is made.”

Capt. Barr said he is looking forward to a well-earned retirement.

“I can’t wait to fully step into my role as a grandfather. I have 11 grandchildren and one new great-grandson,” he said. “I’m going to teach them what I learned growing up on the bayous and lakes in St. Bernard, how to hunt and fish, maintain their equipment, and be respectful young ladies and men, with the Lord’s help.”

Sheriff Pohlmann and the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office thank Capt. Barr for his years of service and wish him a happy and fulfilling retirement.
