SBSO ARRESTS WOMAN FOR ANIMAL CRUELTY; ANIMALS SEIZED

The St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office arrested a woman in connection with an animal cruelty investigation involving dozens of animals found in unsafe and unhealthy conditions, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.

Tina Bernard, of the 1700 block of Robert Drive in St. Bernard community, was booked Monday, May 18 with aggravated cruelty to animals.

Detectives with the Criminal Investigations Bureau, in conjunction with investigators from the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry, St. Bernard Parish Government and state-licensed veterinarians, conducted an investigation into allegations of animal cruelty at the residence.

During the execution of a search warrant at the property, investigators discovered conditions depicting severe animal neglect and cruelty. Authorities located approximately 47 dogs – including 37 found inside the residence and 10 outside – as well as chickens, parrots, ferrets, horses and a pony.

Veterinarians on scene determined many of the animals were suffering from serious health concerns and were in danger of imminent death.

As a result of the investigation, the Sheriff said an arrest warrant was obtained for Bernard, who was taken into custody without incident.

Due to the conditions at the property, multiple animals were removed from the property by Parish Government officials and Animal Shelter personnel. Authorities said animals requiring immediate medical attention were removed first, and additional animals are expected to be relocated as the investigation continues.
At this time, authorities said 14 dogs, five horses and one pony have been seized from the property.

The investigation is ongoing, the Sheriff said.
