SBSO ARRESTS TWO TEENS FOR STOLEN U-HAUL TRUCK

The St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office arrested two teenagers Monday afternoon on various charges after fleeing in a stolen box truck from Special Investigations Division Narcotics Unit agents, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.

A 16-year-old male juvenile from Violet was booked with aggravated flight from an officer, resisting an officer, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, aggravated criminal damage, illegal possession of stolen property, driver must be licensed and on a fugitive escapee warrant.

A 15-year-old male juvenile from Meraux was booked with illegal possession of stolen property, resisting an officer and on a bench warrant out of St. Bernard.

On Monday, Jan. 9, at approximately 4 p.m., Sheriff Pohlmann said, SID Narcotics Unit agents on patrol in the Chalmette area conducted a traffic stop on a U-Haul truck with a wrecked front end and a shredded rear driver side tire after it failed to use a turn signal when traveling eastbound on East Girod Street.

During the traffic stop, the driver, later identified as the 16-year-old male juvenile, refused to stop.

After wrecking the truck in the 200 block of East Prosper Street, the 16-year-old driver, along with the 15-year-old male juvenile passenger exited the truck and fled on foot. Both were apprehended by agents nearby after a brief struggle.

During the investigation, agents learned the U-Haul truck was reported stolen out of Orleans Parish and was involved in a hit and run earlier in the day in St. Tammany Parish.

A criminal background check was conducted on both juveniles which revealed the 16-year-old was listed as a missing person out of Baton Rouge and as an escapee from the Bridge City Center for Youth, and the 15-year-old has an active bench warrant out of St. Bernard juvenile drug court.

Based on the above findings, both male juveniles were transported to the St. Bernard Parish Juvenile Detention Center to be booked on the above charges.
