SBSO ARRESTS NEW ORLEANS MAN TRYING TO CASH STOLEN CHECK

The St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office arrested a New Orleans man Wednesday after he tried to cash a stolen check at a Chalmette bank and fled from deputies, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.

Titus Peters, 20, of the 1700 block of Humanity Street in New Orleans, was booked with bank fraud, flight from an officer and trespassing.

On Wednesday, May 25, around 10:30 a.m., Sheriff Pohlmann said, deputies responded to a call for service in reference to a customer trying to cash a $4,200 stolen check at a bank in the 3100 block of Paris Road in Chalmette.

When deputies with the Field Operations Bureau Patrol Division arrived on the scene they came into contact with the suspect, later identified as Peters, in one of the bank’s drive through service lanes.

As deputies approached Peters, he fled in a dark colored BMW, eventually exiting the vehicle and fleeing on foot.

During the incident, patrol deputies and detectives with the Criminal Investigations Bureau, along with the Slidell Police Department’s K-9 Unit, were able to apprehend Peters as he hid behind a nearby business in the 5001 block of Paris Road in Chalmette.

Peters was taken into custody and transported to St. Bernard Parish Prison to be booked on the above charges.

Sheriff Pohlmann said the stolen checks are believed to be linked to a residence burglary which occurred in New Orleans. The investigation is ongoing.
