SBSO ARRESTS NEW ORLEANS MAN, MALE JUVENILE FOR STOLEN VEHICLE

The St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office arrested a New Orleans man and a 17-year-old male juvenile on multiple charges following a traffic stop Tuesday morning, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.

Cornelius Tillman, 18, of the 4900 block of Francisco Verrett Drive in New Orleans, was booked with possession of stolen property, flight from an officer, aggravated flight and hit and run.

A 17-year-old male juvenile, also from New Orleans, was booked with possession of a firearm by a juvenile, flight from an officer and carrying of a firearm or dangerous weapon in a firearm free zone.

On Tuesday, Jan. 17, around 9:40 a.m., Sheriff Pohlmann said, Field Operations Bureau Patrol Division deputies in the Meraux area attempted to conduct a traffic stop on St. Bernard Highway near the corner of Judy Drive on a white Kia listed as stolen out of New Orleans.

The driver of the vehicle, later identified as Tillman, refused to stop.

After wrecking the vehicle in a business parking lot in the 7200 block of St. Claude Avenue in Arabi, Tillman, along with the 17-year-old male juvenile passenger who was armed with a handgun, exited the car and fled on foot.

Both subjects were apprehended by Patrol deputies and Special Investigations Division agents nearby after a brief struggle.

Sheriff Pohlmann said the handgun, a Smith & Wesson SD40, was recovered, and, out of an abundance of caution, nearby Arabi Elementary School was placed on lockdown for a brief period of time until both subjects were apprehended. No students were outside at the time of the incident.

Tillman was transported to St. Bernard Parish Prison and the 17-year-old male juvenile was taken to the St. Bernard Parish Juvenile Detention Center to be booked on the above charges.
