SBSO ARRESTS MAN FOLLOWING HIT-AND-RUN TRAFFIC FATALITY INVOLVING CHILD
The St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office has arrested a man involved in a hit-and-run traffic fatality in which a small child lost their life Monday morning in Chalmette, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.
Napoleon Espino, 41, of the 51 block of East Claiborne Square in Chalmette, was booked with hit and run causing death or serious bodily injury.
On Monday, March 11, 2024, shortly before 9 a.m., Sheriff Pohlmann said, deputies responded to a call for service in reference to a car striking a pedestrian near the corner of Laplace and East Liberaux streets in Chalmette.
When deputies arrived on the scene they found a small child suffering from injuries sustained after he was hit by a 2007 Honda Ridgeline that fled the scene.
The boy, who turned 6 on Sunday, was transported to an area hospital where he sadly succumbed to his injuries.
During the course of the investigation, deputies with the Field Operations Bureau Traffic Division and detectives with the Criminal Investigations Bureau were able to link the Honda Ridgeline to Espino, an arrest warrant was issued and he was taken into custody.
Sheriff Pohlmann sends his thoughts, prayers and condolences to the family of the child during this difficult time.
