SBSO ARRESTS MALE JUVENILE, ISSUES SUMMONS TO SEVERAL TEENS FOLLOWING ALTERCATION

The St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office arrested a male juvenile and issued summonses to five other teens following an incident that occurred Wednesday afternoon in Meraux, Sheriff Pohlmann said.

A 17-year-old male juvenile from Meraux was booked with illegal discharge of a weapon and aggravated criminal damage to property.

The other five juveniles involved in the incident, a 15-year-old female, a 16-year-old female, a 17-year-old female, a 16-year-old male and a 17-year-old male, were each issued a summons for simple battery.

On Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2023, shortly after 4 p.m., Sheriff Pohlmann said, Field Operation Bureau Patrol Division deputies responded to a call for service for shots being fired in the 2400 block of Garden Drive in Meraux.

When deputies arrived on the scene they learned the five juveniles showed up at the 17-year-old male’s residence on Garden Drive and a physical altercation ensued, prompting him to enter his residence and retrieve a firearm.

After exiting the residence, the 17-year-old male juvenile brandished the weapon, firing multiple rounds and striking the window of a neighboring residence and the group of teen’s unoccupied vehicle.

The five teens then entered their vehicle and fled the scene, but were apprehended shortly after by deputies at a nearby restaurant in Meraux.

Sheriff Pohlmann said no one was injured as a result of the weapon being fired.

The 17-year-old was transported to the St. Bernard Juvenile Detention Center to be booked on the above charges.

The five juveniles were issued summonses to appear in court at a later date.

During the course of the investigation, deputies learned some of the students involved in the incident on Garden Drive are Chalmette High School students.

Out of an abundance of caution, Sheriff Pohlmann and St. Bernard School Superintendent Doris Voitier are working together to have a large presence of deputies on the Chalmette High School campus for the next few days.

The investigation is ongoing, the Sheriff said.
