SBSO ARRESTS MALE JUVENILE IN CONNECTION WITH AUTO THEFT INVOLVING SMALL CHILD AND ATTEMPTED CAR JACKING

Following a lengthy investigation, the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office arrested a 17-year-old male juvenile in connection with an auto theft involving a small child and an attempted carjacking which occurred within minutes of each other in January in Chalmette, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.

The 17-year-old male juvenile from New Orleans was booked with attempted armed robbery, aggravated kidnapping of a child, aggravated flight from an officer and theft of a motor vehicle.

On Tuesday, Jan. 24, shortly before 7 p.m., Sheriff Pohlmann said, deputies responded to a call for service in reference to an attempted carjacking on Buffon Street near East St. Bernard Highway in Chalmette.

The two victims of the attempted carjacking told deputies they were able to flee in their vehicle after they were approached by two male perpetrators who exited a light-colored SUV and one of them brandished a weapon.

Just minutes later, the Sheriff said, deputies received a call in reference to a black 2019 Acura TL occupied by a small child being stolen from outside a business in the 2000 block of Paris Road in Chalmette.

Deputies spotted the Acura traveling at a high rate of speed northbound on Paris Road and followed it into eastern New Orleans, assuming the child was still inside, but they discovered she wasn’t after the two male suspects abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.

Deputies found the 6-year-old female in good health near the corner of Delille and West Moreau Streets in Chalmette inside the SUV, both abandoned by the two suspects before they fled the parish in the Acura.

During the course of the investigation, detectives with the Criminal Investigations Bureau determined the two male suspects in the SUV who committed the attempted carjacking were the same two perpetrators who stole the Acura with the child inside.

Detectives also were able to confirm the 17-year-old male juvenile was present at both locations during the time of the two incidents.

The investigation is ongoing, the Sheriff said, and detectives are actively searching for the second suspect in the incident.

Sheriff Pohlmann said these types of actions will not be tolerated in St. Bernard.

“If you come into our parish in a stolen vehicle and try to commit these kinds of crimes, we aren’t going to stop working until we catch you and arrest you,” the Sheriff said. “Our job is to deter these types of criminals from thinking they can come here and endanger our residents and our way of life.”
