The St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office arrested a Houma man wanted for second degree murder by the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office following a traffic stop in Chalmette, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.

Kereon Alexander, 23, of the 2600 block of K Street in Houma, was booked with illegal carrying of a firearm by a felon, possession of a stolen firearm, possession of a firearm in the presence of controlled dangerous substance, obstruction, resisting an officer/false name, possession of marijuana, smoking in vehicle with children under 8, and on the outstanding second degree murder warrant out of Terrebonne Parish.

On Friday, Sep. 16, 2023, shortly before 2 a.m., Sheriff Pohlmann said, deputies with the Field Operations Bureau Patrol Division conducted a traffic stop on a 2009 Gray Nissan after observing it disregarding a traffic signal near the intersection of West Judge Perez Drive and Center Street in Arabi.

As deputies approached the vehicle they detected a strong odor of marijuana emitting from inside the vehicle, which was driven by Smith, and also occupied by Alexander and a 1-year-old female seated in the rear of the vehicle in a child seat, but not restrained.

During the course of the investigation, deputies recovered marijuana, and a Glock 27 listed by the Zachary Police Department as stolen.

A criminal history check was conducted on both Alexander and Smith, which revealed Alexander had an active warrant out of Terrebonne Parish for second degree murder.

Alexander and Smith were both transported to St. Bernard Parish Prison to be booked on the above charges.
