SBSO ARRESTS CHALMETTE MAN ON BURGLARY CHARGES
The St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office arrested a Chalmette man for burglarizing one local business and attempting to burglarize another, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.
➡️Matthew Lightell, 39, of the 2900 block of Palmetto Street in Chalmette, was booked with simple burglary and attempted simple burglary.
On Thursday, Sept. 10, shortly after 9 a.m., deputies responded to a report of a burglary at a business in the 300 block of West Judge Perez Drive in Chalmette that had occurred sometime overnight.
The front door to the business was damaged, the cash register appeared to have been forcibly opened, and cash and several items were missing from the store. Deputies also discovered that the business’s main power breaker appeared to have been turned off.
Also, on Sunday, Sept. 20, shortly after 4 a.m., deputies responded to an attempted burglary at a business in the 2500 block of Buffon Street in Chalmette after the owner observed the suspect on a live surveillance feed and provided deputies with a description.
While canvassing the area, deputies located a man riding a bicycle who matched the description provided by the owner. The suspect, identified as Lightell, was taken into custody without incident. He was transported to the St. Bernard Parish Correctional Facility for booking.
During the course of the investigation, detectives with the Criminal Investigations Bureau were able to identify Lightell as the suspect in the earlier burglary that occurred on Sept. 10.
