SBSO APPREHENDS LAFOURCHE MAN WANTED IN FATAL SHOOTING IN CHALMETTE

The St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office, has apprehended a Lafourche man wanted in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred July 15 in Chalmette, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.

David Waguespack III, 20, of the 500 block of Saint Charles Bypass Road in Thibodaux, is being held in the Lafourche Parish Correctional Complex in Thibodaux and is awaiting transfer to St. Bernard where he will be booked with second degree murder.

On Saturday, July 15, 2023, shortly after 5 p.m., Sheriff Pohlmann said, deputies responded to a call for service in reference to a shooting in the 1100 block of Magistrate Street in Chalmette, behind the Val Riess Sports Complex.

When deputies arrived on the scene they found an adult male victim lying on the ground suffering from gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

During the course of the investigation, detectives with the Criminal Investigations Bureau were able to identify Waguespack and a 17-year-old male juvenile as suspects in the shooting.

The 17-year-old male juvenile from Chalmette was taken into custody July 15 and booked with second degree murder. An arrest warrant was issued for Waguespack.

On July 19, around 10:45 p.m., Sheriff Pohlmann said, Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies conducted a traffic stop on La Highway 20 in Chackbay. During the stop, Waguespack was identified as a rear passenger in the vehicle and he was taken into custody.

Waguespack was booked on the St. Bernard warrant for second degree murder, as well as on two outstanding warrants for contempt of court in Lafourche Parish.

Sheriff Pohlmann said no one else was injured during the July 15 shooting, and this was an isolated incident between the suspects and the victim who were acquaintances.
