SBSO AGENT RICHARD SCHEUERMANN RECEIVES CRIMESTOPPERS OUTSTANDING SERVICE AWARD
St. Bernard Sheriffâs Office Agent Richard Scheuermann was honored with the 2025 Oscar J. Tolmas Charitable Trust – Crimestoppers Outstanding Service to the Community Award March 13 at the 40th Annual Crimestoppers Award Luncheon, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.
Darlene Cusanza, president and chief executive officer of Crimestoppers of Greater New Orleans, said the award honors law enforcement officers who display the core values of the oath: Honor, Character, Courage, Public Trust, Service to Our Communities, Reverence for the Law, Commitment to Leadership, Integrity in All We Say and Do, Respect for People and Quality Through Continuous Improvement.
âRecipients of this award should be recognized by their law enforcement peers and the community for efforts that have gone above and beyond the call of duty,â Cusanza said. âThey should display high personal standards of honesty, integrity, moral fortitude, leadership, and selflessness.â
Sheriff Pohlmann said this honor is a reflection of Agent Scheuermannâs hard work and commitment to serving others.
âAgent Scheuermannâs strong moral character, dedication to helping those in need, and his unwavering commitment to Christ, the justice system and community service make him deserving of this honor,â the Sheriff said.
A 12-year veteran of the St. Bernard Sheriffâs Office, Agent Scheuermann began his law enforcement career in 2013 in the Corrections Division, working at the Parish Prison. A year later, he graduated from the Peace Officers Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) police academy.
In 2018, he transitioned to the Field Operations Patrol Division, and by 2019, he had earned a coveted position on the Special Weapons and Tactics S.W.A.T. team. The following year, he transferred to the Special Investigations Division Narcotics Unit, where he was promoted to agent and continues to serve today.
In 2020, Agent Scheuermann was honored with the Kiwanis Life Saver Award for rescuing a woman from drowning in Bayou Bienvenue. He was later named the St. Bernard Sheriffâs Office 2022-23 Deputy of the Year and recognized by the Knights of Columbus Archbishop Rummel Council 5747 in Chalmette for his dedicated service to the residents of St. Bernard Parish.
He also was recognized by Sheriff Pohlmann in 2024 with the Medal of Merit award for his exceptional service in preventing crime and apprehending dangerous criminals, and a Medal of Achievement award for his role in tracking down and arresting a fugitive wanted for a New Orleans homicide.
In 2023, Agent Scheuermann played a key role in establishing the St. Bernard Sheriffâs Officeâs Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) lodge, the nationâs largest law enforcement organization which advocates for improved working conditions, benefits, and resources for officers while also enhancing public safety.
Agent Richard Scheuermann also was instrumental in establishing a state-of-the-art exercise facility for the department. The facility, which opened in 2024 with the Sheriffâs support, provides deputies and civilian employees with 24/7 access to resources that promote physical and mental well-being.
The Sheriff said the facility not only strengthens the men and women of the department, but also benefits the residents of St. Bernard Parish by ensuring a healthier, more resilient law enforcement team.
âA well-conditioned deputy handles job demands better, experiences less stress, and performs at a higher level, leading to safer communities, better decisions, and stronger connections with the public,â the Sheriff said. âAgent Scheuermannâs hard work and commitment have created a lasting impact that will benefit SBSO personnel and the community for many years to come.â
Col. Daniel Bostic, commander of the Special Investigations Division and Agent Scheuermannâs supervisor, said his relentless dedication as a Narcotics Agent has resulted in significant drug seizures and the arrest of numerous violent offenders, both in St. Bernard Parish and throughout the metropolitan area.
âAgent Scheuermannâs unwavering commitment to taking dangerous criminals and drugs off our streets is evident in his outstanding work,â Col. Bostic said. âHis efforts to stop crime have undoubtedly helped make our community a safer place for everyone.â
In 2024, the U.S. Department of Justice Federal Bureau of Investigation recognized Agent Scheuermann for his crucial support of the FBI New Orleans Gang Task Force during a homicide investigation.
His efforts resulted in the arrest of two violent offenders, the seizure of multiple kilograms of illegal drugs, and the identification of a fentanyl dealer supplying St. Bernard residents – contributing to an ongoing federal case.
Beyond his badge, Agent Scheuermann also is a beacon of light within his church community.
For more than a decade, he has demonstrated a strong commitment to serving others as an active parishioner of Believerâs Life Family Church in Gretna by mentoring youth, assisting with church functions, and organizing outreach events such as spring fairs, fall festivals, car shows, and cook-offs.
Sheriff Pohlmann said Agent Scheuermannâs selfless service, both in and out of uniform, has strengthened the Sheriffâs Office and the St. Bernard Parish community.
âHis recognition with this prestigious award is a testament to his unwavering dedication to protecting and uplifting those around him,â the Sheriff said.
