SBSO 35-YEAR VETERAN DEPUTY PASSES AWAY
Sheriff James Pohlmann sadly reports a 35-year veteran deputy of the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office passed away earlier this morning, Wednesday, Dec. 4.
Sgt. Marty Melerine Sr., 85, of Poydras, passed away at his home around 6 a.m. surrounded by his loving family.
Sheriff Pohlmann is saddened by Sgt. Melerine’s passing.
“The passing of Sgt. Melerine brings me great sadness,” Sheriff Pohlmann said. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. He will be greatly missed.”
Sgt. Melerine, began his career in law enforcement in the late 1980s as a member of the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office Marine Division. Over the years he also worked in crime prevention and as a member of the Field Operations Bureau Patrol Division.
In 2008, Sgt. Melerine became a member of the Traffic Division where he was still working part-time serving his beloved community by handling vehicle lock outs and responding to traffic accidents.
“If you have ever locked your keys in your car and called the Sheriff’s Office for help, there’s a good chance Sgt. Melerine was the one who came to your rescue,” the Sheriff said. “His dedication to serving our community touched countless lives in ways we often take for granted.”
Sgt. Melerine, a widower who lost the love of his life Vivian Gonzales Melerine in June, leaves behind a daughter, Jill A. Melerine, two sons, Marty A. Melerine, Jr. and Dean J. Melerine, and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
