Lt. Eric Eilers named director of Community Relations Division

Lt. Eric Eilers has been named director of the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office Community Relations Division, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.

A 20-year veteran of the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office, Lt. Eilers began his career in law enforcement as a volunteer Reserve Division deputy in 1999.

After being hired full time in 2010, Lt. Eilers worked in the Corrections Division at St. Bernard Parish Prison for four years. In 2014, Lt. Eilers moved to the Community Relations Division, where he has worked the past five years under Capt. Charles Borchers who retired at the end of 2019.

Lt. Eilers said he is looking forward to serving in this new role.

“Part of the reason why I love working in this department is because it allows me to be very involved in my community,” he said. “I live here in the parish so what’s going on here is important to me.”

As director of the Community Relations Division, Lt. Eilers said his goals include increasing community participation in various programs they offer, such as Citizens Police Academy, Junior Deputy, Refuse To Be A Victim and National Night Out Against Crime.

“My goals are to move these programs along further, and expand what we offer,” said Lt. Eilers, who will be assisted by Chaplain Aaron Johnson.

Lt. Eilers also will oversee the Reserve Division, a group of unpaid, volunteer officers who supplement the department in specific situations, including working during large scale events such as festivals, parades and athletic events throughout the parish.
