What is Help Me Home?

The St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office “Help Me Home,” created in cooperation with the St. Bernard Autism Awareness Krewe, is a voluntary enrollment program for adults, parents, and/or caregivers of individuals in St. Bernard Parish who have various mental or physical challenges including but not limited to diagnoses such as Autism, Down Syndrome and Alzheimer’s.

The program is designed to provide first responders with critical information about the individual’s intellectual or physical condition in the event they ever need assistance and/or are unable to communicate effectively on their own.

“The St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office’s mission has always been to keep St. Bernard residents and those within our parish safe,” Sheriff James Pohlmann said. “This program is a reflection of that commitment and our awareness of those individuals most vulnerable in our community.”

Caregivers can register their loved ones for the program by completing the online registration form.

The St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office is proud to offer the “Help Me Home” Program to the residents of St. Bernard. This program is designed to allow parents and caregivers of individuals in St. Bernard suffering from various mental or physical challenges to provide first responders with pertinent physical and behavioral information about the individual. This includes individuals that may be unable to communicate with first responders for various developmental diagnoses (Autism, Alzheimer’s, Down Syndrome, etc.). Once an individual is registered with the program, first responders will be able to receive the provided information to allow them to safely and effectively assist, interact, and/or search for the individual. Using the individual’s physical description provided and photograph, first responders can determine who they are, where they live, and contact the individual’s caregiver. Furthermore, behavioral information will provide notice to the first responders of communicative issues they may experience when coming into contact with the individual.
This Program is completely voluntary and offered for the sole benefit of the residents of St. Bernard Parish. By agreeing to provide this information, the parent or caregiver acknowledges that they are the authorized individual to provide the information on behalf of the registered individual and agrees to provide complete and accurate information in support of the Program. Information provided to the Program will be verified by the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office.
Upon completion of the application, you will be asked to upload a copy of the following documents:
(1) Valid state driver’s license or ID.
(2) Photo of person in submission.
