Below is a statement from Entergy Louisiana regarding on oil release in Arabi.

On Sunday, Sept. 25, Entergy became aware of an oil release at the de-energized Arabi Substation. This substation has been de-energized since a tornado impacted the area in March of this year. The total volume of the release is currently estimated at 20,000 gallons. The released oil does not contain PCBs. A portion of the released oil entered adjacent open water, the marsh of Bayou Bienvenue, and is present along the shoreline, and the resultant oil sheen appears to be consolidated, intact, and contained within a floating containment boom.

Immediate notification of the incident was made to the Louisiana State Police, the St. Bernard Parish Local Emergency Planning Committee, the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality and the U.S. National Response Center. Onsite clean-up operations are being managed by Entergy’s Environmental Management team, and Ampol – American Pollution Control, Corp. is serving as the spill response contractor for the duration of the onsite remediation.

The cause of the release appears to have been criminal activity as the valves to two large oil-filled transformers were discovered to have been removed. The release is estimated to have commenced 24 to 48 hours prior to the discovery at midday on Sunday. The St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident.

Entergy is working closely with local government and all applicable environmental agencies.
