Sheriff Stephens and Schools Superintendent Voitier tape anti-drug message for parents

Aug. 26, 2008 - Sounding a theme that parents should talk to their children about drugs because studies show that to be most effective in preventing drug use, St. Bernard Parish Sheriff Jack Stephens and Schools Superintendent Doris Voitier have taped a public service message to run in 30-second segments on WDSU-TV in New Orleans which will soon to begin airing.

The segment, sponsored by the Partnership for Drug-Free America, will run through the end of the year at various times of the day including during WDSU-TV news shows.

The message was taped on Tuesday, April 26 in the library at N.P. Trist Middle School in Meraux, with the sheriff and superintendent seated at a table, surrounded by students from the school.

“Talk to your kids. They will listen,’’ the sheriff says to parents. Sheriff Stephens said the message is aimed at parents rather than youngsters in hopes they will take the initiative to speak with their children.

Voitier said studies have shown “kids who learn about the risk of drugs from their parents are 50 percent less likely to begin using drugs.’’

An anti-drug message from parents, reinforced by other authority figures such as at school, makes a broader impression on a juvenile, Voitier said.
