Chalmette couple leave infant home sleeping while allegedly burglarizing residence; second break-in solved as man found hiding in vent

Aug. 22, 2008 - A married Chalmette couple was arrested after they left their infant and another young child home alone sleeping while they allegedly broke into a residence several blocks away, Sheriff Jack Stephens said.

The second break-in was solved after a man was found hiding in an air-conditioning vent and he and a woman were arrested, the sheriff said.

Jason Cain, 28, and his wife, Christy Cain, 29, both of 514 Chalmette Ave., were arrested just after midnight the morning of Thursday, Aug. 21 after they were seen running from a residence on Fourth Street which intersects with Chalmette Avenue, the sheriff said.

Sheriff’s deputies, responding to a call of suspicious activity, ordered the pair to stop and questioned them separately.

Mrs. Cain said she had to get home because they had left their 4-month-old child and 4-year-old child unattended at home, Sheriff Stephens said.

He said that as deputies went to check on the children, the woman acknowledged they had gained entry to a house by standing on a car in a driveway and forcing a side window open.

A backpack containing tools and other items stolen was located behind the car they stood on, the sheriff said.

Meanwhile, Sheriff Stephens said, deputies found the infant and the 4-year-old alone in the couple’s residence, sleeping in separate bedrooms. The children were later turned over to a relative of the arrested couple.

Christy Cain was booked with simple burglary, child desertion, criminal trespassing and, in an unrelated matter, with obtaining prescription drugs under false pretenses based on an outstanding warrant for her address. She is being held in St. Bernard Parish Prison in lieu of $75,000 bond. Jason Cain, booked with child desertion, criminal trespassing and unauthorized entry of a dwelling, is being held in lieu of $25,000 bond.

In the other burglary case, Corey O’Conner, 28, 3604 Park Blvd., Chalmette, was booked Monday, Aug. 18, with burglary, possession of stolen property over $500, aggravated escape from an officer and resisting arrest in connection with the theft of construction equipment stolen in the burglary of a trailer parked outside 3620 Park Blvd, the sheriff said. O’Connor, also booked as a fugitive from Jefferson Parish where he was wanted on a burglary warrant, is being held in St. Bernard Parish Prison lieu of $50,000 bond.

Deputies developed information that a man named Corey was walking around the area looking at the trailer and he lived nearby and drove a black Monte Carlo auto, Sheriff Stephens said.

Deputies found the car and it was registered to Corey O’Connor and it was learned there was an outstanding warrant for his arrest for burglary in Jefferson Parish, the sheriff said.

When deputies went to the door a woman who answered, Magen Musmeci, 18, who said O’Connor was her boyfriend, said he was out of town. Musmeci, the sheriff said, granted permission for a search of the residence and in a bedroom locker items were located that had markings consistent with those described by the victim.

When deputies continued to search the residence for O’Connor they found him inside an air-conditioner vent behind a filter, Sheriff Stephens said.

The suspect said Musmeci had nothing to do with the burglary but he then attempted to escape from deputies by running outside, where he was immediately caught, Stephens said.

Musmeci said she knew nothing of the tools in the locker but she was booked with theft of property over $500 and possession of stolen property over $500. She was jailed in lieu of bond set at $15,000.
